Urban Sequoia NOW
November 8, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EET
12:00 – 13:00 (EET)
The built environment is currently responsible for nearly 40% of annual greenhouse gas emissions. Our future depends on how effectively we address these emissions, which we now know requires immediate mitigation of our carbon (CO2) footprint, as well as an increase in carbon storage. Considering that the urban building stock is anticipated to double by 2060; as architects and engineers, our solutions are urgently needed. The built environment must shift from carbon emitting to carbon sequestering designs, systems, and processes. A systemic approach to buildings, where synergies are drawn between innovative design solutions, effective technologies, and integrated construction processes, could offer the transferable and scalable solutions we all need. By sequestering CO2 through advanced, building-integrated strategies–using Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and technological systems–the built environment can be part of the solution for a decarbonised future.
The undertaken research – titled “Urban Sequoia NOW” – deploys these ideas into a multifaceted design that enables a building to act like a tree today, absorbing more carbon than it emits. The solutions-focused proposal presents an innovative system, comprising products, materials, and technologies to not only minimise carbon emissions, but also enable buildings to become vehicles for carbon capture and storage in cities all around the world.
