From Hawaii to the Heartland: Advancing Equitable, Ambitious Solutions to Climate Change in US Cities & Counties

November 12, 2022 @ 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm EET

Cities are responsible for 75% of global CO2 emissions, with transportation and buildings among the largest contributors. In the United States, local governments are implementing a range of place-based, community-driven solutions to combat the climate crisis while protecting the health, safety and welfare of residents and businesses.

In this session, we will showcase the approaches of three distinct parts of the country: Des Moines, Iowa; Maui County, Hawaii; and San Jose, California and explore the key policies and innovative approaches they are taking to accelerate progress.

We will discuss the role of public-private partnerships and stakeholder engagement in their climate mitigation and adaptation efforts and hear how each region’s policy environment and natural environment shapes their approaches to the work.

  • Hosted by Hilari Varnadore, USGBC
  • Speakers include Mayor Frank Cownie, Council member Kelly King, Mayor Sam Liccardo, Deepa Vedavyas of the Cleveland Foundation
